A simple lesson in how to live to the glory of God.
An epitaph on a tombstone is said to read, "Here lies the body of Thomas Jones, born a man, died a grocer." Substitute any occupation you wish for “grocer,” and the result is the same for Thomas Jones, or any of us. The epitaph suggests that Mr. Jones somehow stopped being a human being, made in God's image, and became only a person engaged in a given occupation.
It's easy to get trapped or enticed into living in that manner. We can too easily become corporate men and women, focused only on our occupations within the world of work. When we do, we ignore or relegate to positions of little importance the human and spiritual facets of our lives.
Contrast Thomas Jones’s epitaph with another’s. An epitaph on one Thomas Cobb’s ancient tombstone is said to read like this:
To Thomas Cobb
Who mended shoes
In this village
For forty years
TO THE GLORY OF GOD.
