WORKLIFE GENESIS
WorkLife was birthed 10 years ago out of the vision to provide ALL individuals and organizations with the opportunity, ability and tools to find Life in work. Today, WorkLife effectively serves all types of workers in all types of occupations. Its reach lets it serve throughout the world with curriculum, tools, and a highly effective online workweek companion called Maestro WorkLife Subscription. Maestro has the unique ability to pinpoint the specific spiritual work challenges a person encounters and direct content and encouragement to help that individual address that pain. This is the first “needs-based” coaching system used in workplace ministry.
WorkLife was originated by Doug Spada, the founder and CEO. He had previously worked in the military as a nuclear engineer and an operator of fast attack submarines. Following this, Doug threw his energies into starting and running a successful energy consulting firm in Southern California throughout the 90's.
After increasingly finding himself involved in sharing the reality of the gospel within the context of his daily work and the relationships that naturally occur in a working environment, he was struggling to find the best way to personally experience God’s best and deepest calling for his life. Doug looked to his own local church for answers, and this intensified the confusion and truth about his personal calling around work. Watch a short video of Doug sharing this with leaders.
CRITICAL LEARNING
Initially reasoning that joining church staff would be the most significant way to walk out his sense of personal calling, Doug set out to do just that. However, this door kept closing and Doug struggled to understand why. This experience increased Doug’s frustration concerning the understanding of faith, work and calling. After a challenging period of grappling with these issues, God led Doug to the profound but practical truth that his spiritual gifting had everything to do with his vocational life irrespective of the role or place. Work took on an entirely new perspective as Doug began to experience the biblical truth that work is a holy calling when done with, for and through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Finally, there was freedom to work as a genuine calling of God. See the Worklife Core Beliefs.
VISION TO APPLICATION
That movement in Doug's life meant that the birth of WorkLife was in its earliest stage. God continued to pursue Doug, calling him to a year of prayer focused on seeking how to best assist others, millions of others like himself, struggling in this area of their work calling. And what about the local churches role in this? Doug envisioned the tremendous leverage and impact working believers could have on the kingdom of God IF they were equipped and released by their local churches in a sustainable way. Doug used his military experience to shape a message to the church: the church was never meant to function like a cruise ship but should instead be like a strike force aircraft carrier. Ultimately, it became clear to Doug that God wanted WorkLife to help not only individuals but local church leadership to assume their mandate to practically help people find Life in work(Eph 4:11-12). That had never been done before in a viable way. This vision translated into an organization, and WorkLife now serves people and organizations around the world.
Individual success at work is paramount to WorkLife. Most of their energy is spent on helping people that work find a rhythm with God that causes them and their environment to change. Curriculum and tools targeted to a worker’s specific problems has been specialty. See WorkLife products here. Their latest work is a groundbreaking book called "Monday Morning Atheist" examining why we turn off God at work. This work is based on over 4000 surveys of actual workers and what they struggle with at work.
We would count it an honor to serve you individually and/or your church or organization, and we appreciate your interest in the WorkLife organization.
